Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring is a specialty niche in medicine that is unknown to most in the general public and to many in the medical field. The focus of IOM is to monitor neurological structures at risk during specific surgeries and to alert the surgeon to untoward changes in the function of said structures. The ultimate goal is to provided an early alert to changes and to prevent permanent neurological injury. IOM is also utilized to identify neurological structures, such as a cranial nerve surrounded by tumor tissue, thereby providing crucial information to the surgeon.
